By Lisa Cypers Kamen, Harvesting Happiness

When struck by an illness, temporary or chronic, it’s very difficult to focus on happiness, but it is not impossible.  Have you ever met the person who chronicles their illness symptom by symptom versus the person whom you find out has an illness who mentioned it in passing.   Their level of happiness I believe is a direct reflection as to what they chose to put their focus on.

I used the word choose, because what we choose to focus on is a choice.   And if you are in a situation struggling with illness you can choose to focus on the illness which is not going to help you get better, or you can choose to focus your attention on those things that do bring you pleasure or happiness despite your illness.  Choosing to view your illness as a part of your life as opposed to your whole life can make the difference between a fair day and a great day.  I think of Stephen Hawking confined to a wheelchair and yet he makes great contribution and clearly does not let his situation hold him back.

Part of feeling happy is contributing and finding the way we can each contribute despite our illness is one way back to our personal power.  Being ill or chronically ill is very difficult. Still we can choose to see the bright lining of each day and the joy in the people and things around us.  The power of choice is what gives us satisfaction and we can choose to show up in our illness with sorrow or with gratitude for what we do have.
